Desktop Computer - Won't start up

Finally has a full time job... through mid May!
This is a rant, and a help post, two in one.

Alright, I'm currently on my laptop, because my desktop computer will not start up. It's been doing this for about a week, but eventually.. I could get it started, tonight.. it wouldn't.

I plug it in, turn it on, and all it does is light up and make some of the normal noises. It sounds like it's attempting to start, but maybe just not getting all the "power" it needs. I don't know if that makes sense, but that's the best way I can explain it.

I wondered if it could be the power cord, or if it's something with the actual computer?

Frankly, I don't have the $ to have Best Buy look at it, and it's out of warrenty... ARG! If I'd bought the extended warrenty, it would have probably paid off this time. I just can't win for losing!

Anyone have any thoughts?

Luckily, almost everything is backed up, with the exception of about two hours work that I did yesterday. So if it has to sit for awhile, so be it.

Edited for a typo.

I work in the computer industry and I have to agree with Records. It sounds like the power supply is failing. :share:

Typically, if a power supply goes, it goes. The question here is if all the pc's lights and fans come on and stay on. And if there is any image on the computer screen. Let me know!

CRAP! (I can say that... right?)

Ok, I do hear the fan, but it's not as loud as it was before. It is blowing a little bit of air though.

The only image I get is that the monitor is on standby, but I'd get that even if I just turned on the monitor and not the computer.

Yes, the light on the back of the computer does come on, as does the light on the power button and on the CD-Rom drive. When I attempt to turn it on, they all come on and stay on. It just doesn't seem to want boot up, and doesn't make as much noise as it used to make.

Hopefully that makes sense.

I seriously think I'm in the wrong profession. I could have gone into computer repair and been worth my weight in gold fixing my own computers much less other folks!

No beeps?

It is not your power supply. If the lights are on, then it is home. My first thought is the video card (graphics). It could be the motherboard itself, but I have no way of knowing. It might be a RAM issue, but normally you'd hear beeps (on most newer mobos). If I were there, I'd know in about 2 mins!

It shouldn't be your hard drive because your pc would still boot and the monitor would show that boot process. So that's good. Also, it shouldn't be your CPU as most newer computers will automatically shut down if an issue is detected with the CPU. A loose cable? Not likely if you haven't moved your pc recently.

The price for service really varies and would greatly depend on what type of pc it is. I can't offer any concrete pricing since I don't know any other details. I wish I could help more!

The motherboard played out on the one I had before this, and when that happened then nothing worked, it wouldn't even turn on. I haven't noticed any beeps, but I'll try it again tomorrow and see what happens.

This one's only about three years old. I can't believe it's doing this!

Ah well.. I will have to wait on the income tax refund before I can do anything.

One other question: Could a virus have caused this? It was without virus software for a few weeks. (Yes.. I know that's a big no-no..)

My .02: it doesn't really sound like a virus to me. They *usually* behave much differently, mostly affecting your software. It sounds like a hardware issue. I'd have to agree that it could very possibly be the graphics card. No one can really tell you without looking at it first, but I had a similar issue with the graphics card in mine. Mine was lose once before and I fixed that, but it also did that when it eventually failed..

I agree with PHC. Usually if it is a virus you can still get to the boot screen. It isn't normally until you actually try to load the software that problems happen. My money is on the video card (possibly RAM). If it is a stand alone card, they are really inexpensive to replace - of course this depends on the tech. If it's built into the motherboard, it normally can be by-passed with a stand alone provided you have the ports. As for mobo's acting like this, it does happen. I've seen just about every strange combination out there.

I didn't think it was a virus either. I thought they caused mostly software issues. But then again I'm no pro. And I know viruses can do really, really weird things.

I really wish I knew more about these things. LOL!

Now for the good news. You guys are not going to believe this.

Turns out, I DID purchase the extended warrenty, and it's good until 4/16/2010!!!!

I needed to take down my desktop, so I could hook up my laptop to the printer, and while looking for the printer book, I ran across my original reciepts. The one on top was the extended warranty! They're faded, but still readable!

So I'm off to Best Buy tomorrow to see if it's a problem they can fix and will be covered under warranty. *crosses her fingers*

Yippee!

Thanks so much for your thoughts and help. It felt good being able to talk this out with someone.

I'll let you guys know what the verdict is when I find out!

BTW: I attempted to get the thing to working, before taking it down. There were no beeps. However, as soon as I plugged it in it tried to turn on, without me pushing the button. Maybe it's haunted.....

LOL!

I am so glad you got that warranty! Yay! Be sure to let us know what was wrong with it!

As for ghosts in a computer? I've never seen those, but I have found spiders and other bugs! *shudders*

Well, turns out it is not the computer.

In fact, my computer got a clean bill of health except for the fact that I need to do a windows update and degfragment the hard drive. Neither of those are surprising considering I don't use that computer as much as I used to. There were no viruses on the computer, which I'm pleased about considering it was without virus protection software for awhile.

It is the monitor. So in the next few days I'll start looking at monitors and prices. Best Buy was a tad pricey and nothing that would fit on the desk along with my large printer. I need one about 18". Their smallest was almost 20". If I find one cheap enough, I can get it now... otherwise, I'll be using my laptop till my tax refund gets in, and I just mailed it today! LOL

Again, thanks so much for your help!

Oh, that makes sense. The monitor. Yeah, I go through monitors like crazy.. I don't know why. Usually they give me some kind of indication they're going to blow, though.

If you have a Costco or Sam's Club membership, try looking there!! I got one really cheap from there.. it was a pretty good one, too. Cheaper than all the other stores were pricing them at the time! Good luck finding one soon!
