I recently got my first maverick Care Bear. I always thought they were really rare, but I see that many of you have them in your collections. I know that they are the result of factory mistakes (wrong color and/or wrong size and/or wrong tummy symbol). Let's face it, large factories are bound to make some mistakes during mass production of toys. So these were the result. My question is HOW exactly were these maverick Care Bears let out of the factories? They didn't sell them did they? Were they given to employees? Did employees take them home figuring that they'd be destroyed anyway? Were they thrown away and then people found them somehow? My maverick is pink w/ a small Tenderheart symbol on his tummy. Does anyone else have one like this? I really want to add some more mavericks to my collection too- where did you all get yours??? |

Kinda like yellow Birthday Bear with wish symboals.. I was not a 80's collector, But i'm sure more people will help you on this question.. Here are a picture of my mavericks.. Sorry i had to edit this..

i think it has to do with quality control. sometimes now youll see things like toys in the wrong boxes, wrong colors, paint messed up , etc and they slipped passed them and were sold that way. my favorite maverick is that wish/gentle heart lamb! i must track down one. |

There's another possibility... Care Bears are not the only thing I collect, and at one point I had a factory contact for my other collection. One of a kind items? He could do it on his lunch break or after hours. Most factories are subcontracted out meaning things can be slipped in after the official production line ends. With as many mavericks as there are out there I find it hard to believe there were this many errors, this almost seems to be a case of a factory making non-official merchandise after hours, perhaps for sale in the home market or Third World countries. Some may have ended up mixed in with the official merchandise. So that's my theory on this matter. |

WorkOfGrumpy: I LOVE your purple wish bear! So sweet! Swift Heart Rabbit: that's a very good theory. I also collect American Girls dolls, and many of their outfits end up on Ebay as the rsult of a 'grey market' situation; the doll items are produced in overseas factories according to the original patterns, fabrics, tags, etc but without consent of the company, and they end up on Ebay. Of course the original Care Bears were around long before Ebay, but I could see a similar situation occurring when a toy is so popular. If anyone ever has to sell a maverick, be sure to let me know.
